The McMullin Line
The surname McMullin is of Scottish origin. The name is an anglicized form of the Gaelic name Mac Maolain, a patronymic from the byname ‘Maolan’, a diminutive of ‘maol’, bald, tonsured. The name normally referred to a wearer of the tonsure, and, in a transferred sense, to a devotee of a particular saint. The clan MacMillan had possessions near Knap, Loch Suibne, and a boulder on the shore is said to have engraved on it in Gaelic their claim or charter to the lands: ‘Coir Mhic-Mhaoilein air a Chnap, Fhad’s a bhuaileas tonn air creig’, ( Macmillan’s right to Knap while wave strikes rock ). If so ‘all vestige of it is worn away. This is believed to be not entirely owing to wind and weather, but to the effacing chisels of Clan Campbell, who ere long acquired the lands of their hereditary foes’. A scottish bearer of this name, a Patrick Macmillan of Glasgow, ‘patented’ a tartan which he registered as Breacanseilgmhicgillemheoil! The name dates back to the fourteenth century were a John Macmakmylan is recorded in historical archives. The name was brought to America by Scottish immigrants.
This page is dedicated to the McMullin line.
I found this online but I can't remember where. This is a photo of the McMullin children. I think that the shorter boy is Vinson Charles "Mack" McMullin.

Grandpa Mack - Vinson Charles McMullin
My grandmother Lavina Walker married Vinson Charles McMullin Oct 24, 1948 in Costa Mesa, Orange County, California. Jan 24, 1959 they were sealed in the Los Angeles, California LDS Temple. Lavina Walker divorced her pervious husband Samuel Jefferson Black. I don’t have the divorce date between Lavina and Sam but they were married March 8, 1930 in Seattle, King County, Washington and Lavina and Sam were sealed in the Mesa, Arizona LDS Temple on April 28, 1931. The Seattle area is where Sam was stationed in the Navy. I believe Lavina had a sister or two living in the Seattle area at the time of their marriage there.
When my dad, Paul Leon Black, was at the age of 17 years old when his step-father Vinson Charles McMullin married his mom Lavina. Paul was a pretty independent individual at this time and I don’t believe he accepted Vinson (or “Mack” which everyone called him) as a father figure. His other father Sam was stationed away from home a lot and Sam left for good when my dad was about 3 years old. So about 14 years, Lavina had to earn a living without a husband. Leon (dad was called Leon when he was younger) had his older half-brother Conrad, who was 12 years older, to help take care of him. Also, Leon’s grandmother Lottie “Brimhall” Walker came from Utah to California, where they were living to help out. So, besides his mother, it was both Lottie and Conrad that my dad Leon had at authority figures. Leon never really had a father figure long enough in his life and he learned at an early age how to manipulate his grandmother. Leon’s grandmother, Lottie, passed away April 3, 1947 while Leon was 16 years old.
Mack was a mechanic and worked on cars. Mack was listed as working for Leach Motor Car Company, as a mechanic in 1917 according to his draft card. This was a California-built high-class luxury automobile that found favor with Hollywood celebrities during the early 1920s. Information on this car can be found at: http://www.coachbuilt.com/bui/l/leach/leach.htm. In the 1930 U.S. Census, Vinson “Mack” was listed as an automobile mechanic for his occupation.
Mack was previously married to Gertrude Lucille Shaw and Mack had a son from this marriage by the name of Vinson T McMullin. Vinson and Gertrude were married on July 8, 1915. I don’t have a place of marriage. Gertrude Lucille Shaw was born November 9, 1985 (Place unknown) and she died in May 27, 1970 and. Her burial is in the Rose Hill Memorial Park cemetery, Whittier, California, Gardenia Lawn, burial section 1. In the 1930 and 1920 U.S. Census, Gertrude birth Place is listed as California, her father’s as England, and her mother’s as Pennsylvania. The 1930 U.S. census show that Gertrude’s brother, Edward Shaw, was living with them. This census states that Edward was 19 years old, single, born in California, and was working at a service station as a gas and oil man. According the 1920 U.S. census (taken in January 1920), Mack and Gertrude’s son, Vinson T McMullin, was born about October 1919, in California (Stated as 3/12).
Lavina passed away November 12, 1965 in her Long Beach, California home. Mack was grief stricken and became senile. Mack passed away September 2, 1971 in Whittier, California. Dad’s half-brother and his family took good care of Mack before he passed away. Both Mack and Lavina are buried at Rose Hills Memorial Park Cemetery, Whittier, California in Nauvoo Lawn Burial Sec. 3.
