The Griswold Line
This page is dedicated to the Griswold line.
Greswold
Warwickshire, England - About 1270
I entertained the idea that what Herbert Edmond, who had submitted a family tree on behalf of his wife, could possibly be a continuation of our Griswold line. however, he had not provided any sources to validate his claim. When I e-mailed him to ask for any sources that will prove the extended Griswold line, He would not do so, but stated that his wife bought a Griswold book that gave this information. He would not tell the name of this book, nor were he purchased it. The following document that you can download are gleaned information from what was provided by Herbert Edmond. He submitted it as a family tree to ancestry.com. It would be cool to verify because he has taken the Griswold (Greswold) line to England to about the year 1270. He shows that (our connection) Albert James Griswold’s parents were Juvenal Griswold and a Mary L. Click here to download the word doc:

I had recently verified that Herbert Edmond's claim is in error and have discovered one more generation back from Albert James Griswold. This was managed by discovering to documents. The first was information from “In The Court of Appeals of The State of New York – In
the Matter of the Application of Henry A. Hinman, Petitioner, Appellant, For
the Removal of Vena M. Hinman, Administratrix, Respondent, From the Office as
Administratrix of the Estate of Charles N. Hinman, Deceased”, (1912, Vol. 82); which is a 1,300 page document. From this document we find that the parents of Albert James Griswold were Albert Griswold and Melissa Foote. We find that Albert James Griswold was an only child and that he was living in New Mexico at the time of this hearing. We also find information on Melissa Foote and her other children from her other marriages. This shows that Juvenal and Mary were not the parents of Albert James Griswold. The other document is from
the
Chapel Cemetery Records of the town of Coventry, Chenango County, New York. It show that there were three Griswolds buried there. 1) Griswold, Juvenal, b. Oct. 17, 1799, d. June 24, 1876; 2) Griswold, Agnes, his
wife, b. Nov. 3, 1803, d. Mar. 21, 1840; 3) Griswold, Albert J., d. May 14, 1844,
ae. 23. This shows that Juvenal's wife was Agnes. And even though it shows a Albert J. Griswold, he died May 14, 1844. Our Albert James Griswold was born on Jan 1845 and was buried in Aztec, New Mexico. So, these two documents prove that there were two Albert J. Griswolds that lived in Coventry, New York and that Juvenal and Mary were not the parents of our Albert James Griswold. However, to be fair, the population of Coventry back then and even now are less than 2,000. This means that any Griswolds living in Coventry were probably related somehow. There are some other facts that were discovered in my research. 1) The
first settlement was in the Chenango area was near the current Coventry village.
Coventry was formed from the town of Greene in 1806. In 1843, the area of the
town was increased from parts of Greene and the town of Oxford. The name of
Coventry was named after Coventry, Connecticut by settlers from New England. In
fact, the majority of the settlers came from New England, especially
Connecticut. 2) In
History of the Town of Coventry, by Oliver P. Judd, chapter VIII, it states
that there was an Albert Griswold that was a school teacher in Coventry in the
early 1800’s. 3)
The
population of Coventry in 1865 was only 1,522 and its area 29,306 acres.
Albert James Griswold

The 1880 U.S. Census of Leadville, Lake County, Colorado. Listed are A. J. Griswold and his wife A. This is Albert James Griswold and his wife Anna. Albert is 55 year old at this time and Anna is 21 years old. According to this census, Albert was born in New York and both his parents were also born in New York. It shows that Anna was born in Missouri, her father born in Pennsylvania, and her mother born in West Virginia. So what was Albert doing in Leadville Colorado? His occupation is listed on this census as miner.
The mining history of Leadville began in 1860 with the discovery of gold south of town. This area became a tent town but later cabins were built. For $1, you could rent a bunk at one of the tent lodging places. The gold rush later turns to a silver rush by 1880. And at the beginning of 1880 Leadville had 30,000 residents with boarding houses, hotels, and stores. The famous Molly Brown arrived as a teenager in the early 1880s. She worked as a seamstress in a dry goods store. She eventually married J.J. Brown, and became the "Unsinkable" Molly Brown. Buffalo Bill and Doc Holiday are also all part of Leadville's colorful past. Teddy Roosevelt also paid visits to Leadville.

The next valuable document is the (2) 1885 Colorado State Census of Lake County. A. J. Griswold is listed as head of the household, age 60, Roomer, occupation Smelter__ ?, and born in NY. This census spells out the wife’s name as Anna. It states that Anna is 26 years old, at home, and born in MO. This census shows a child, Bertha Griswold, age 1, and born in Colorado.
The next valuable document is (3) 1889 Leadville City Directory. Here it states that Albert J. Griswold worked in the lab at American Smelter and lived at 518 W. 3d.
The next important Document is the (4) 1900 U.S. Census of San Juan County, New Mexico. This is Precinct no 10 – Cedar Hill. Albert J. Griswold is listed as head of the household, born on January 1845 in New York, age 55, farmer, and both his parents were born in New York. His wife listed is Anna, born May 1859 in Missouri, age 41. It states that her father was born in Pennsylvania and her mother was born in Virginia. This census shows three children in this household as follows: Lena F Griswold, daughter, born on June 1887 in Colorado, age 13. Samuel Griswold, son, born on Nov 1893 in Colorado, and was age 6. Rosa Griswold, daughter, was born on Dec 1896 in New Mexico, and age 3.
With all these four documents we now can come to an understanding. Albert J. Griswold was born in New York where his parents were born. He eventually settled in Leadville Colorado in 1880 or prior to this date. We don’t know if any of his family members, parents, or wife came with him. He worked at the American Smelter. The 1900 U.S. census states that second child was born in Colorado on May 1893 but the third child was born in New Mexico on Dec 1896. This census lets us know that Albert J. Griswold gave up working for the mining industry and move to San Juan County, New Mexico sometime during or after May 1893 and took up farming. This is the beginning history of the Griswold family that I have gathered.
The next important Document is the (5) 1910 U.S. Census of San Juan County, Aztec, New Mexico. Albert J. Griswold is listed as head of the household, born in New York, age 65, farmer, and both his parents were born in New York. His wife listed is Anna, born in Missouri, age 50. It states that her father was born in Pennsylvania and her mother was born in West Virginia. This census shows four children in this household as follows: Lena Griswold, daughter, born in Colorado, age 22, and a dressmaker. Samuel E Griswold, son, born in Colorado, and was age 16 and a farmer. Rosa E Griswold, daughter, was born in New Mexico, and age 13. Frederick Griswold, son, was born in New Mexico, age 9.
At this point, we might want to know more about Albert J. Griswold’s wife Anna Giles.
