We are related to James Abram Garfield the 20th President of the United States
James Abram Garfield the 20th President of the United States is my 6th cousin 3 times removed. Our common ancestor is Samuel Lathrop (1623-1700). James A Garfield was born on November 19, 1831 in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. He was the last president to be born in a log cabin. A Williams graduate, he taught school for a time and entered Republican politics in Ohio. In 1858, he married Lucretia Rudolph. During the Civil War, he had a promising career, rising to major general of volunteers; but he resigned in 1863, having been elected to the House of Representatives, where he served until 1880. His oratorical and parliamentary abilities soon made him the leading Republican in the House, though his record was marred by his unorthodox acceptance of a fee in the DeGolyer paving contract case and by suspicions of his complicity in the Crédit Mobilier scandal.
In 1880, Garfield was elected to the Senate, but instead became the presidential candidate on the 36th ballot and he defeated Gen. Winfield Scott Hancock, the Democratic candidate. Garfield's administration was barely under way when he was shot by Charles J. Guiteau, a disappointed office seeker, in Washington on July 2, 1881. He died in Elberon, N.J., on Sept. 19 1881.

We are related to Charles Julius Guiteau
Every family line has at least one bad egg in the basket and the Guiteau line has Charles Julius Guiteau - the guy who shot President James Abram Garfield, the 20th President of the United States. He is my 2nd cousin 3 times removed. Our common ancestor is Dr. Francis Guiteau (1736-1814). It is a little known fact that Charles Guiteau was related to President Garfield. Charles and President Garfield are 6th cousins. Many print and speak of Mr. Guiteau's insanity as the reason for him shooting the President. Many try to explore a link to having insanity in the Guiteau family. And I am not denying that he had developed mental illness prior to the shooting. However, He has held some prominent positions in society. In fact, the Guiteau line, that can be traced clear to France in the 1540's, and to the Huguenots, have always held prominent positions in every generation. Many have served under the King of France as doctor and counselors. From doctors, lawyers, counselors, city officials, political figures, and war heroes, have been the norm for the Guiteau people. The Guiteau families living after the time of Charles Guiteau now have to evade the constant questions that ask if they are related to the man who shot the President. All of the accomplishments in the Guiteau line are now forgotten because the shooting are all anyone knows or cares to know. To say that he had a bad upbringing or bad genes are only those trying to give reason for a demented soul. Charles Julius Guiteau was born September 8, 1841 and was executed on June 30, 1882. Even though Charles was unsuccessful in many of his pursuits in life, he was not an unlearned man. He studied theology and law. Charles eventually passed the bar and got his license to practice law. He started a law firm in Chicago; even though it was based on fraudulent recommendations. He also tried to start up a newspaper, but failed. His real troubles started when he pursued political endeavors. Charles mother was described as a woman of purity of life, of Christian character, and a lady of cultivation. His father was also described as having Christain values and could not tolerate those that drank in excess. Charles Julius Garfield shot President James A. Garfield in the arm and in the back. But, it was said that because of unsanitary conditions, the president's wounds became infected and he died 11 weeks after being shot. Two of Charles defenses were one: He didn't kill the president because he died 11 weeks later, and two: It wasn't his fault that the president didn't take good enough care of himself and having unsanitary conditions after Charles shot him.

The Prisoner's Last Words
(June 30, 1882)
_I am now going to read
some verses which are intended to indicate my feelings at the moment of leaving this world. If set
to music they may be rendered very effective. The idea is that of
a child babbling to his mamma and his papa. I wrote it this
morning about ten o'clock:
_
I
am going to the Lordy, I am so glad,
I am going to the Lordy, I am so glad,
I am going to the Lordy,
Glory hallelujah! Glory hallelujah!
I am going to the Lordy.
I love the Lordy with all my soul,
Glory hallelujah!
And that is the reason I am going to the Lord,
Glory hallelujah! Glory hallelujah!
I am going to the Lord.
I saved my party and my land,
Glory hallelujah!
But they have murdered me for it,
And that is the reason I am going to the Lordy,
Glory hallelujah! Glory hallelujah!
I am going to the Lordy!
I wonder what I will do when I get to the Lordy,
I guess that I will weep no more
When I get to the Lordy!
Glory hallelujah!
I wonder what I will see when I get to the Lordy,
I expect to see most glorious things,
Beyond all earthly conception
When I am with the Lordy!
Glory hallelujah! Glory hallelujah!
I am with the Lord.
I am going to the Lordy, I am so glad,
I am going to the Lordy,
Glory hallelujah! Glory hallelujah!
I am going to the Lordy.
I love the Lordy with all my soul,
Glory hallelujah!
And that is the reason I am going to the Lord,
Glory hallelujah! Glory hallelujah!
I am going to the Lord.
I saved my party and my land,
Glory hallelujah!
But they have murdered me for it,
And that is the reason I am going to the Lordy,
Glory hallelujah! Glory hallelujah!
I am going to the Lordy!
I wonder what I will do when I get to the Lordy,
I guess that I will weep no more
When I get to the Lordy!
Glory hallelujah!
I wonder what I will see when I get to the Lordy,
I expect to see most glorious things,
Beyond all earthly conception
When I am with the Lordy!
Glory hallelujah! Glory hallelujah!
I am with the Lord.

We are related to Lady Godiva
Lady Godiva (or Godgifu) (980 - 1067) is my 28th great grandmother. She married Earl Leofric of Mercia III (975 – 1057). The legend of Lady Godiva dates back to England in the Middle-Ages when the Saxon wife of a Danish Lord rode naked through the streets of Coventry in order tolessen the burden of taxes on the local people. The legend states that she begged her husband several times to not raise taxes on the people but he would always refuse. The last time she begged him he jokingly said that he would if she rode her horse naked through the street. She took her husband as an honorable man so she did just that. There are several versions to this story; however there have been studies to find if this legend has any validity to it. It has been found that the only truth to this legend is that Lady or Countess Godgifu (Godiva) existed and she was married to Earl Leofric of Mercia. And that’s about it! If you want to find out more about the legend of Lady Godiva then here is one link: http://harvardmagazine.com/2003/07/lady-godiva-the-naked-tr.html
